PM Narendra Modi urged for peace and harmony on his visit to Manipur.

PM Narendra Modi Visits Manipur

PM Narendra Modi addressed two separate gatherings in Imphal and Churachandpur in his first visit to Manipur since ethnic violence broke out in May 2023. The clash broke out between the Kuki-Zo tribes, who dominate the surrounding hills and the Meitei, who predominantly live in the valley.

Over 250 people were killed in violence, while 60000 people are still living in makeshift camps established by the government as violence broke out after the government took initiative following court orders to include Meitei in Schedule Tribe Communities.

In Charachandpur, a hilly district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with victims in relief camps and assured them of government assistance, while underlining the importance of restoring normalcy. PM announced the construction of 7000 homes, a Rs 3000-crore special package, and Rs 500 crore of relief.

“The Government of India is with you, with the people of Manipur. The government is making all efforts to bring back normalcy,” Modi said.

PM Narendra Modi avoided committing to a division of the state, as tribal communities, including the Kuki, were demanding. Instead, he promised to strengthen the local governance and provide direct government funding. ” It is the government’s effort to strengthen local body governance. Appropriate funds are being arranged for the development of local bodies. The development of every tribal community is a priority for the country.” Modi said.
